In Second Life I have been hanging out a lot in a sim that recreates Amsterdam. Its been 11 years since I lived there, but this simulacra brings back memories of the place something fierce.

One of the things I remembered this morning, the first place I stayed on my first trip was the apartment that my then girlfriends mom and boyfriend shared. It was in the red-light district. The Apartment used to be the club house for the Hell's Angels. Big butcher block furniture. And a huge hearth. Above the hearth was a big metal cowling with thick wood borders, in which was carved "Tiny was here". Wood floors, which were almost level. On the windowsill, was a bookend that looked like a Tiki idol. They had found it at the market -- like a huge outdoor thrift store.

Then there was the time, I had to run to my boss' house for something. I forget what. His house was in a very upscale neighborhood, and it was lavishly furnished and decorated. Quite the opposite of the apartment in the red-light. Thick plush carpets, and I remember there was even a redwood sauna. Expensive electronics. And on the windowsill, the mate to that tiki idol bookend. Where in the other apartment it was something found at a second-hand market, here it was displayed like it was a piece of art that fit in with all the other posh things.

I was greatly amused.

Your story makes me grin. Imagine having two views of the world given to you from the viewpoint of a tiki.
