I am a victim of Hype
Jun. 17th, 2006 11:04 amSo I've been a Superman fan all my life. But the Hype for the new movie has gotten me excited. Something else has rekindled my love for the Man of Tomorrow as well.
Two days ago, Conor said he didn't like Superman.
My own flesh & blood! How could this be?
Well it all worked out well enough. Just making Superman things available for him to play with and read and he came around. I started playing with an old Superman Action figure that somehow made its way to the Livingroom. This is when he told me he didn't like Superman when I asked. So I just started playing with it. Conor got a Super Battle Droid from Star Wars and started to pretend to shoot Superman.
I told him, "Only two things can hurt Superman, and a gun isn't one of them."
"What hurts Superman?"
"Well I'm not gonna tell you, you have to figure it out for yourself."
"My gun shoots fire! Is it fire?"
"No its not fire. That's the Martian Manhunter's weakness"
"Uh.... Kryptonite?"
"Kryptonite?! How do you know about Kryptonite?"
"From Krypto the Super Dog."
Well it was nice that he was at least a little bit versed in Superman Mythology even if it came from a a somewhat dubious source.
Yesterday he picked out on his own at the store some toy Kryptonite and got a Superman T-shirt. I successfully converted my son to Kal-Elism.
In my enthusiasm I went and got all my Superman comix out of the garage.
On of the toys Conor and I played with was a Doomsday figure, Conor asked me who he was, and I told him he killed Superman, and he was amazed. So I asked him if he wanted to see the comic that Superman fought Doomsday. He said he did, and he and I read Superman #75 together last night.
So it seems that the Hype started kicking into overdrive yesterday. I got an e-mail for a Pepsi promotion yesterday, and saw a commercial for a Superman branded Cap'n Crunch. Seeing these product tie-ins it makes me wonder whatever happened to one of my old favorites: Superman Penut Butter. I can't beleive I am the only one who remembers this. Don't believe it was a real product? Just google it. I would think that with the new movie, a return of Superman Penut Butter would be situated for a grand return. But I don't think it is meant to be. On a semi-related note I haven't seen Donald Duck Orange Juice in ages.
When I was skinny, working at Intel and living in the Sacramento Area, I bought a Superman Belt at the Warner Brother's store. I love this belt. But when I plumped up on my meds a few years back I got too fat for it. Yesterday I dug it out of the garage and to my delight if fits me again.
Now I need to find my Superman T-shirts. I wpmder which one I should wear on the 28th.
