Substitute Sensei Steps In
Jul. 27th, 2003 01:50 pmSo, I return from my four-week vacation to the wild lands of the midwest where there are no Aikido dojos, only to find that my Sensei himself is on vacation, as well as the ranking (Godan) teacher, so there have been other folks teaching classes.
So, I go to the saturday class only to find out that there is no teacher scheduled, that whoever happens to be the highest ranked student will lead the class. Well Sarah 3-dan who works in the office (and hates to teach) didn't bring her gi, so she's out. Then there was Jackie 1-dan, and she was defering to me, even though she got her shodan before me because she had been out of training for a while, and didn't want to teach, so the class fell to me.
Luckily, I have been learning to be a teacher from Dan 5-dan, and have been teaching kids for a while now, so I knew how to run a class. But this was my first time leading a class of grown-ups, so I was a bit nervous. But, everything went really well. I would even say things went very good.
My best pal,
aikiwombat, was very enthused about the class afterwards. I guess many of the other substitute sensei's classes have gone like, "Well what do you all wanna do?" "I dunno... something...." Not that I am the best substitute sensei -- far from it. I heard that a dojo-cho from one of the other dojos came last saturday. I wish I could have been there for that, he is a GREAT teacher.
But teaching grown-ups was a pleasure. I have found my passion. I love teaching Aikido, I hope to do it for a long long time.
