Feb. 15th, 2003 10:32 amI wrote a song about the valentine gift my sweetie,
keltgrrl gave me:
I got a 3-D Card
One that finally works!
Sixty-Four Megabytes,
Three-fifty Megahertz!
I got a nVidia Geforce 2 Mx-400 AGP video card with Tv-out. This is a good good thing.
Until very recently my systems the past few years have been built out of the spare parts of my friends. So when I actually get a new *something* for my system its a big deal.
I've always been lacking when it comes to video. For years I've used a 1 MB video card. Then a friend gave me an old Voodoo 2. It worked on Quake when I was running Win 98 but when I upgraded to XP, the card didn't work anymore. You see the folks at nVidia bought 3dfx, the folks who make the voodoo cards, and basicly stoppped supporting them. I couldn't find any dirvers for the card that worked in XP.
A friend recently got me an ATX case, which meant I could finally build a system around a motherboard a friend gave me many many moons ago. That mother board has an AGP slot and he filled it with a 3dfx Voodoo 3500 TV. Again the same problem with driver support. Could not get 3-d to work. But on the plus side, I had 16MB for 2-d graphics. The bad news, the driver kept crashing the system. SO my sweetie let me get a video card that works!
Now I have this problem, I have nothing to really see this card do its 3-d chops. Well I do have ONE program. This lil fish in a aquarium 3-d demo that I downloaded when I got the voodoo 2, but never got to work... UNTIL YESTERDAY! Yay I got 3-d fish! Very spiff.
Now I need a monitor that can display better than 800x600.
What I really want is a 3-d VR type enviroment where I can have an Avatar and talk to other folks. Someone sent me a link to one of those places, but I didn't have a video card that would work with it... now I can't find the place....
What I really want is a realization of Neal Stephenson's Metaverse.
